IBA Confucius Institute organized the Chinese New Year celebrations for the second time running – with red paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling and stairs, Chinese greetings posted on the doors and walls to bring good fortune to the students, and the Chinese Spring Gala Festival playing in the background on the huge TV screen.

This was the festive atmosphere awaiting the students on Friday, 10th February 2017, when they could absorb the rich smell of home-made dumplings and Chinese Jasmine tea as soon as they entered the canteen.

Director of the Confucius Institute, University Professor Gail, along with intern Junyu, showed the audience the techniques involved in preparing, rolling and forming traditional Chinese dumplings.

After the students made their own dumplings, they chose between two different flavours of filling for their dough: beef with onions or pork with celery. The students and teachers also enjoyed two differently flavored sweet rice dumplings, filled with sesame seeds, while expanding their knowledge about the characteristics of traditional Chinese tea.

It wasn’t just the dumplings which brought a taste of China to IBA, Kolding, but also the regular buffet at the IBA Canteen, which had Chinese courses on offer throughout the week. Since the Chinese celebrate the New Year with family and friends, delicious Chinese food is of course an indispensable part of the festival.

During the event various activities could be found to entertain curious students: riddle games tested knowledge about Chinese culture, where each correct answer won the student a prize of a panda key chain, chopsticks or a bookmark.

This celebration helped raise awareness of the importance of the collaboration between Denmark and China within the walls of IBA, and encouraged more students to apply for the Chinese Language and Culture and Business Chinese and Culture courses at IBA Confucius Institute.
